Our Projects

Dr Charles MacLeod
Babcock International Group / Royal Academy of Engineering Senior Research Fellow in Sensor-Driven Automated High-Integrity Welding

March 2022 ·

Traditionally, welding and inspection of high-integrity joints are separate, sequential processes, reducing productivity and increasing rework if defects are only detected at completion. This fellowship seeks to introduce the volumetric imaging capability of ultrasonics directly into the welding process and aims to deliver high-integrity welds right first time, every time.

Professor Alastair Florence
EPSRC
Made Smarter Innovation - Digital Medicines Manufacturing Research Centre

September, 2021 ·

The Medicines Made Smarter Data Centre (MMSDC) looks to address the key challenges which are slowing digitalisation, and adoption of IDTs that can transform processes to deliver medicines tailored to patient needs.

Professor Gareth Pierce
Spirit AeroSystems / Royal Academy of Engineering Research Chair in In-Process Non-destructive Testing for Composites

March, 2020 ·

Professor Pierce plans to revolutionise non-destructive testing (NDT) for composites throughout the aerosystems manufacturing process. As demand for composite parts in the sector increases, Professor Pierce’s research will increase the efficiency of NDT while maintaining and enhancing quality.

AWESIM

July, 2020 ·

Automated Welding Equipment System Inspection and Monitoring (AWESIM) Programme: the aim of AWESIM is to embed inspection, closed-loop control and automation directly at the point of welding to deliver high-quality welds right, first time.

Delivering Enhanced Through-Life Nuclear Asset Management

May, 2017 ·

Combined life extension and new build programmes in Civil Nuclear, running in parallel with life extension and new build in submarine nuclear programmes places a significant demand on asset integrity inspection.

New Wire Additive Manufacturing (NEWAM)

June, 2018 ·

3D printing, or, Additive Manufacturing (AM), has rapidly come to prominence as a valid and convenient alternative to other production techniques. Integrating NDE inspection into the AM process is essential for production quality.
